What is a Book Synopsis?
So, what is a book synopsis? A book synopsis is a short, clear and concise summary of a book’s main idea, structure, and purpose. It outlines the main plot points, central characters, and narrative arc—usually in one to two pages.
Unlike a back cover blurb, which teases the reader without revealing too much information, a synopsis includes spoilers. It provides a clear beginning, middle, and end so agents and editors can assess your story's pacing, structure, and marketability.
Although a synopsis is sometimes confused or used interchangeably with a summary, it differs from a summary because a synopsis typically is used in order to sell a publisher, printing press, or agent on the book rather than the general public.
A book summary, typically just a few paragraphs, includes more of the characters and developments without exposing the ending. You don’t have to worry about ruining the ending when trying to understand how to write a book synopsis—you want the resolution to be included,
When Do I Need a Book Synopsis?
A book synopsis is used most often by agents and publishers in order to decide if they want to take on a book or work with the author. It can help to find a publisher, or come up with marketing and sales agreements, or agents may use the synopsis as a reference point when sharing your work.
You might also use a synopsis if and when you’re applying to a writing contest or for grants. Depending on the situation, the requirements can change—some situations require a one-page synopsis, others require two to five. Always check the submission guidelines.
So now you know what, and you now know when, let's move to the how to write a book synopsis.
5 Steps to Write a Book Synopsis
Step 1: Start with the Basics of Your Book
Introduce the protagonist(s) or central character, the setting, and the central conflict or idea in the first paragraph.
Be sure to include:
The character’s name (and age if relevant)
Their goal or motivation
The problem they’re facing
Step 2: Follow the Plot Structure of Your Book
Move through the major points of your story:
Initial Incident: What gets the ball rolling for your story?
Rising Action: What turning point or obstacles build tension in your book?
High-point/Climax: The emotional or physical climax in the story.
Resolution: How is it resolved?
Be clear and ensure the information is in chronological order, don’t avoid the resolution, and remember that you also want to make sure you are including the character arcs as these are important to depict how those in your story have evolved throughout. A character arc describes the internal journey journey of the character that changes that character throughout a story, typically due to facing challenges and obstacles. The goal is to bring the full picture of your book to life for your synopsis audience.
Step 3: Keep the Synopsis Style Professional
Write in third-person present tense, even if your book uses a different point of view. Keep your tone engaging but professional—this isn’t the time for flowery language or jokes, even if we all love jokes. There will be other opportunities to sell people on your glowing personality.
Step 4: Keep Your Writing Concise
Unless otherwise requested, stick to 500–800 words for a standard one-page synopsis. Trim subplots, secondary characters, and thematic tangents unless they’re essential to the story overall.
Step 5: Edit your Synopsis Ruthlessly.
Don’t let a typo get between you and your chance to win over a big publisher, a high stakes contest, or some other important event. Read and re-read, have other people take a look at your work, and don’t forget to change it up as needed by submission requirements (or when dictated by reader feedback).
If you’re still feeling like the water is murky, we have a simple outline to follow to get the ball rolling for your book synopsis.
